Success! Well, at least the starts of success anyways with the continued attempt to remove the crankshaft pulley. We jacked the car up, removed the wheel dollies, dropped the car, chocked the wheels. Tried the impact wrench one last time, and then again after that just to make sure it would not get the job done. Then we put a breaker bar on the bolt, and tried to twist it off and had the same problem. Even with the car on the ground, in gear, and with the wheels chocked, the car still wandered around as we spun the pulley. Finally we put on a REALLY BIG screwdriver into the pulley, and ground it out against the frame. Then we put the breaker bar on, and added the 6 foot piece of pipe for good measure. This did the trick, after about 1/8 of a turn the bolt broke free. I had the sinking feeling that it sheared the head off the bolt, but it did not. Yeah!
The next thing was to remove the pulleys. A little prying with the screwdriver, and the balancer pulley popped of, and then dropped to the floor. This chipped off a small, but significant piece of the balancer pulley, so we'll need a new one of those.
We tried to pry the crankshaft pulley off using the same method, but were not successful. After a quick trip to the auto-parts store, we were back with a pulley install/remover.
A few quick minutes later we determined we did not have the right tool for the job. It will be back to the store tomorrow with pictures of the crankshaft pulley to show what we really need. If only we took this picture first on the smartphone.....
