Have a big impact

Connor now owns an impact wrench and sockets, and the compressor to drive them with. This is the first large tool purchase, and he dipped into the Birthday, and Christmas money, and miscellaneous bonus jobs around the house money for this one. Harbor Freight had everything we needed in stock.

  • 2.5hp 21Gal compressor
  • 1/2" Drive Impact Wrench
  • 3/8" Hose
  • Quick Connect / Starter Kit
  • Oil
  • Thread Tape.
We spent the evening unboxing the compressor, reading the very important instructions and safety warnings.  Some of the warnings were really bad, eg. "Plugging in an electrical appliance may result in shock, use care!", others were standard compressor stuff "Do this wrong, and you explode!"

After we knew what needed to be accomplished we went out to the garage, and completed the setup. Added the all important, and not included in the box, compressor oil to the motor. I was told that it had some oil in it "just in case", but it was as dry as a bone. Added tool oil to the impact wrench. Used the starter kit to add quick connects to the impact wrench, and the tire inflator, and the blow gun. Unpacked the wrenches and the extension bars. Then we cleaned up for the night.

Hopefully tomorrow we can do the initial break-in of the compressor, and give it a test run. At the end of the test run we'll need to drain the compressor oil, and refill it to get rid of any debris that may have collected in the initial run.

I was starting to think the initial approach will be to hit the stabilizer bolts that we were initially unable to remove with "blaster" again, and then try to break them free with the impact wrench. The only hesitation here is that if we snap the head off of one of these, we'll be left with a bad set of options for how to proceed. I guess that will be a last resort fallback plan if we can't get the crank pulley to come off.
